St. Lazare
This francophone town with its breathtaking scenery is nestled in the Assiniboine Valley near the Saskatchewan border, in one of the prettiest parts in the province.
The community’s history dates back to the 1830s, when the Hudson’s Bay Company decided to build Fort Ellice, a major fur trading post, to supply traders who were on their way out West. The town’s founder, Father Jules Decorby, named St. Lazare in honour of the cathedral of Saint-Lazare d'Autun, in France.

The town of St. Lazare was originally located at the junction of the historic Assiniboine and Qu'Appelle rivers. When the railway came through in the 1880s, the town’s residents began to build their homes closer to the main line, shifting the town to its current location a few kilometres further north.
Proud of its past, the community invites you to take in its Pioneer Day festival in July. Festivities include a pancake breakfast, a parade, a ball tournament, children’s activities, a dance, and more! Come celebrate with the Chartiers, the Fouillards and all the other local families, and be sure to drop in to the Fort Ellice Interpretation Centre.
